How Much Stretch Film Do You Need?

The variables behind film consumption, and a simple worked method to ballpark your rolls per month.

The short answer

Your film usage comes down to film per pallet × pallets per period. Film per pallet depends on load height, how many wraps (revolutions) you apply, your pre-stretch percentage, and film gauge. Estimate film per pallet, multiply by your pallets per day and working days, then divide by the length per roll to get rolls per month. The variables that drive film use

  • Load height, a taller pallet needs more spiral passes to cover top to bottom, so more film per pallet.
  • Wraps / revolutions, how many times film goes around, including reinforcing wraps at the base and top. More wraps = more film and more containment force.
  • Pre-stretch %, how far the film is stretched before it hits the load. At 250% pre-stretch, 1 foot of film off the roll covers about 3.5 feet of load, so you buy far fewer rolls. This is where machines crush hand-wrapping.
  • Gauge (thickness), thinner high-performance films deliver the same holding force with less material. Right-gauging lowers weight per pallet.
  • Pallets per day/week, volume simply multiplies everything above.

How many wraps does a pallet need?

A typical stable pallet uses roughly:

  • ~2 wraps at the base to lock the load to the pallet,
  • ~2 wraps at the top to secure the top layer,
  • 1–2 spiral passes up and down the sides.

That's often 4–6 revolutions total. Unstable, heavy, or tall loads need more; light, stable loads can use fewer. Wrapping more than you need is pure waste, see reduce stretch film cost.

A simple worked estimate

Here's a rough, back-of-envelope method. Treat the numbers as placeholders, plug in your own.

The most sensitive input is Step 1. Improving pre-stretch from a low setting to 250% can cut film-per-pallet substantially, which pulls the whole monthly total, and your roll count, down with it.

The fastest way to get your real number

If you already run a machine, read film-per-pallet straight off its film meter, or weigh a roll before and after a known number of pallets.
