Common Stretch Wrapping Problems & How to Fix Them

Most stretch wrapping problems trace back to two things: machine settings and film choice. Film breaks usually mean too much tension or too low a gauge for the load. 1. Film keeps breaking

Likely causes: tension or pre-stretch set too high for the film grade, sharp load edges cutting the film, gauge too low for the load, or burrs and debris on the machine's rollers. On hand wrapping, jerky pulling spikes the tension and snaps the film.

Fix: Lower the tension and pre-stretch a step at a time until breaks stop. Add corner boards or protection on sharp edges, or move up to a puncture-resistant film. Confirm the gauge matches the load weight using our gauge chart. On machines, inspect the rollers and film path for nicks and clean off debris. 2. Loose film tails at the end of the wrap

Likely causes: a worn or misadjusted cut-and-clamp on automatic machines, a heat-seal or wipe-down mechanism not pressing the tail, or the film's cling side facing outward so the tail will not stick.

Fix: On automatic and inline machines, service the cut-and-wipe or heat-seal so it firmly presses the tail against the load. On semi-automatic and hand wraps, tuck the tail into a lower layer and press it against the cling side. Confirm you are loading the film with the cling side toward the load. 3. Poor load containment (loads leaning or shifting)

Likely causes: not enough containment force, too few wraps, missing base wraps that lock the load to the pallet, or an unstable pallet built before wrapping.

Fix: Increase film tension and containment force so the load is squeezed into a single unit. Add extra revolutions at the base to tie the load to the pallet, and reinforce the top. 4. Film neck-down and roping

Likely causes: the film is roping (folding into a rope-like band) instead of laying flat, usually from excessive tension in a narrow zone, uneven film delivery, or intentionally roping the top and bottom without control. Neck-down is the film narrowing as it stretches.

Fix: Some neck-down is normal as film stretches, but heavy roping across the load reduces coverage and containment. Reduce tension, ensure the film feeds flat and evenly from a properly aligned carriage, and use a film grade with good stretch characteristics. If you deliberately rope a reinforcement cable at the base, use the machine's controlled roping feature rather than letting it happen randomly. 5. Film not sticking (cling side)

Likely causes: the film is loaded with the cling side facing out, a low-cling film grade, cold film, or dusty and wet load surfaces that defeat the cling.

Fix: Most stretch films have cling on one side only, so load the roll with the cling side toward the load so layers bond to each other, not to passing equipment and hands. In cold Houston-area warehouses in winter, let film acclimate before use. If loads are dusty or damp, that surface will resist cling; a higher-cling film grade helps. 6. Inconsistent wraps pallet to pallet

Likely causes: hand wrapping (which varies by operator), no set program on the machine, varying load sizes without adjusted settings, or an operator changing tension between loads.

Fix: Consistency is where machines shine. Set a repeatable program with fixed tension, pre-stretch, and wrap counts so every pallet gets the same treatment.
